Building Rungs: The First Feature, Soft Launch
This post is a continuation of the “Building Rungs” series. The first post is here.
So the functional MVP is up, including some design tweaks. And that really is good enough. The countdown timer is a cool little motivational tool for people trying to make it through the day and it technically doesn’t need anything beyond that. But I would like to enhance it, so as mentioned in previous posts, I’m going to add some jQuery magic to display a random motivational quote every time the page is loaded.
My first step was finding some quotes, which I did by running a Google search and choosing a page at random. It happened to be that the first site I chose had some good stuff. I hand-selected 25 quotes, specifically looking for short ones to make designing the UI easier. I copied and pasted them into a .txt file (nothing fancy). Now it’s time to see if there are any jQuery plugins out there that I can use and a quick search lands me on this fiddle. After playing with that for a while, I instead ended up using code I found here.
It works! So I now have an MVP + an additional feature. Here is a screenshot of it:
As an added bonus, I set up the script that so the quote source (usually an author, sometimes “Unknown”), links to a Google search so visitors can learn more about the minds behind these motivational quotes.
Next up? I think I’m going to work on some schticky features, like random backgrounds depending on time of day in a users location, maybe a weather widget. This will buy me some time while I figure out how serious I want to get with this.
Thanks for following me through this series so far, I look forward to picking it up again in 2015.
